We are bombarded by advertising every day with food featured either as a central theme, or the characters in the advert are eating. Is it surprising that we find ourselves wanting to eat more than 3 times a day?
Television Has Replaced Pavlov
During the 1890s Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov famously conducted an experiment with dogs. He would ring a bell before feeding them and take note of their salivation, over time, their salivation became linked to the sound of the bell rather than the food itself so when the bell was rung in the absence of food the dogs began to salivate.
These physiological “anchors” or “triggers” also affect our eating habits.
We are bombarded by advertising every day with food featured either as a central theme, or the characters in the advert are eating.
Cooking shows have become almost a nightly event, celebrities publish cookery books, daytime TV has guest chiefs cooking a variety of dishes for our delight and there is a supermarket or mini mart on every street corner. Not to mention the plethora of restaurants that have sprung up in our towns and villages. We can’t even fill up our car with petrol without having snacks and coffee tempting us the moment we open the door to pay.
Is it surprising that we find ourselves wanting to eat more than 3 times a day?
Many years ago I embarked on a detox that involved “fasting” and although I admit I found it difficult it was not because of the hunger that you may expect I experienced. In fact the programme I followed was designed to reduce hunger pangs with supplements and roughage.
The thing I found the most difficult was over riding the habits I had surrounding food. What I discovered was that I spent a huge amount of time either shopping for food, making food, eating food and clearing away after food. I found that I snacked at certain times of the day or as a reward after completing an activity.
During my fast my days became long and unmarked by “Breaks”
So my question remains…are our unhealthy eating habits just that, habits. Are we slaves to the rings bell of advertising and commercial gain.
We can become CONSCIOUS EATERS…EATING ON PURPOSE instead of when the bell rings?
