  • Write down and date 5 things you are truly grateful for each day on the pad provided. Start each page with the words “Today I am truly grateful for…”

The Positive Effect Of Gratitude

Research reveals that the simple act of gratitude has many positive benefits.

According to R. A. Emmons.Ph.D.a leading researcher on the link between gratitude and well-being, “gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression”. It also has an impact on the reduction of negative thoughts and emotions such as regret, resentment, frustration, self-doubt, and jealousy.

Gratitude has shown a positive effect on reducing aggression and anger whilst, at the same time, enhancing empathy. In a study conducted at the University of Kentucky in 2010, people who scored higher on the gratitude scale were less likely to retaliate when provoked, showed a decreased desire to seek revenge and displayed greater empathy toward other people.

In 2014 The Journal of Applied Sports Physiology published a study finding that gratitude “increased an athlete’s self-esteem, an essential component in optimal performance.” Gratitude also reduces social comparison, a significant factor in self-esteem issues.

According to a study published in Personality and Individual Differences in 2012 gratitude helps improve physical health, grateful people reported “experiencing fewer aches and pains and feeling healthier than other people”, they are also more likely to take care of their health and take regular exercise.

Spend just 15 minutes jotting down a few grateful sentiments before bed and you may sleep better and longer” claimed a study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-being, in 2011.
